Thriller, Suspense, Dark Adventure

I started writing in my teens to escape my fear of public speaking. Authors such as King and Koontz were my greatest inspirations. I published my first two novels in 2013, and a 3rd in 2014. After a ten year hiatus I started writing again, and released my 4th full-length fiction novel ‘In the Shadow of Shadows’ in 2025. I have one adult daughter, and I am in a long distance relationship with the love of my life. My personal mantra is that my full time job pays the bills, but writing pays my soul!

Wayne Roux’s In The Shadow Of Shadows is a brilliant, unsettling novel that grabs you from the first page and refuses to let go. This psychological thriller is a masterclass in slow-burn tension, expertly building a sense of creeping dread that culminates in one of the most unforgettable conclusions I have read in years. This ending, I can guarantee, will live rent-free in my mind for a long, long time. Roux excels at making the extraordinary feel intimately real, largely thanks to his attention to setting. The story is powerfully grounded in its South African location, and I found myself particularly appreciating the care taken to name specific suburbs in Durban. This level of granular detail immediately pulls the reader into the world.
Maybe I just like to overthink things, but this attention to place highlights a common oversight in contemporary fiction. While Roux, for instance, took the necessary care to name specific suburbs in Durban, other local authors setting their stories abroad seem to overlook this vital step. They often only name the US State, neglecting the ‘proper homework’ required to establish a specific town or locale. This lack of specificity weakens the narrative, making the setting generic and unconvincing—a crucial oversight that diminishes the potential for a truly authentic story. So, I apologise for picking up on small things like this, but Roux’s commitment to grounding his narrative stands out and truly enhances the book’s authenticity.
Beyond the meticulously crafted setting, the narrative pacing is flawless. The characters are complex, flawed, and utterly compelling, drawing you into their darkest corners. But the real star is the final act. It’s challenging, deeply uncomfortable, and perfectly executed. It’s the kind of ending that makes you instantly need to discuss the book with someone else, prompting endless debate over what truly transpired. In The Shadow Of Shadows is a must-read for fans of psychological suspense. It’s taut, intelligent, and boasts a conclusion that is genuinely shocking. If you’re looking for a book that will haunt your thoughts long after you turn the final page, this is it.
